‘Portraits of Landscapes’
This is my first focused series of drawings labeled ‘Portraits of Landscapes.’ The idea is simple. A beautiful piece of earth captured in black ink. A sketch, lines, dots and careful consideration of contrast. I’ve taken time to research stunning natural compositions found in Scotland. The places you see in this series of drawings are all places I’ve been to. These locations signify happiness on a personal level. Some I’ve had a fleeting glimpse of and others I’ve spent hours exploring.
Bow Fiddle Rock
57°42′24″N 2°51′1″W
“The name Bow Fiddle Rock originates from the rock formations likeness to a violin bow tip but because it lies in Scotland, a fiddle bow tip.”
Loch Morlich, Cairngorm National Park
57°10′N 3°42′W
“I’ve biked, rock climbed, hiked, paddle boarded, kayaked, canoeed, camped and skied in the Cairngorms. When considering locations to create work from, this view from Loch Morlich was a must.”
Kylesku Bridge, Quinag
58°15′01″N 5°00′40″W
“The Kylesku Bridge spans the Loch a’ Chàirn Bhàin. The mountain Quinag can be seen in the distance with its characteristic peak. It made an epic backdrop. I knew it would form a formidable composition.”
Suilven
58°06′54″N 5°08′13″W
“I wanted to capture Suilven’s silhouette as the focal point as it sits among the very heart of Assynt’s cnoc-and-loch landscape. I tried to convey the sense that Suilven is alone and remote. ”
The Fairy Pools, Skye
57.25°N 6.2565°W
“The typical fog of Glen Brittle lifted and the imposing pinnacle of Sgurr an Fheadain was revealed directly ahead. The composition lends itself to my style, a brazen mountain silhouette with foreground interest, in this case one of the main pools.”
