I believe it’s my duty to reduce, reuse and recycle as many of the materials I use as possible. All work is created on Daler Rowney 220g/sm, acid free, Smooth Heavyweight paper. I chose Daley Rowney paper as it lends itself well to the detail of my work. I’m yet to find a better quality of paper for fine line work. Additionally, it is FSC approved from responsible sources which is important for the sustainable approach to my work. For creating work my choice of pen is uni-ball’s uni-pin fine line range. After experimenting with a range of brands I found the uni-pin to be the most stable and comfortable pen. It’s waterproof and fade proof ink keeps my work looking fresh for years. Uni-ball are committed to a sustainable approach to their packaging and have been finding innovative solutions to reducing their own carbon footprint. My originals are sent worldwide in 100% cardboard, letterbox boxes to ensure they arrive in perfect condition whilst reducing my carbon footprint. Packaging is sealed with a biodegradable sticker from noissue. My wooden hanging frames are built in my garage. The wood is sourced from a local company. The hanging hooks are iron and silver plated. The string is unbleached natural jute twine. All packaging is recyclable. The frames arrive wrapped in recycled paper to protect them inside a 100% cardboard box which fits through your letterbox. They are sealed with a biodegradable sticker from noissueMy process varies depending on the piece I’m creating. I’ve found my work has organically developed over time. I start with precisely measuring and pencilling in where any straight or curved lines will appear in my work. I work with a HB mechanical pencil as it is quick and easy to erase and I can rely on it always having a sharp point for the details of my work. With initial lines in place, a rough sketch is created with basic shapes to build form and depth. A light source is imagined within the work. I use this to produce the contrast needed in my work. Using pens of varying sizes I use a blend of stippling, mark making and textural shapes to tell the viewer what is happening in the work. I reserve the 0.03mm pen for the finest and most intricate details. ” — Jack Spowart I also have Prints of my work available Jack Spowart Prints
