Folklore shrouds the Old Man of Storr in mystery. My favourite of the many stories is that a giant once lived on the Trotternish Ridge. When he died he was buried under the land. The 50m rock pinnacle which dominates the landscape is said to be his thumb sticking out of the ground. I visited The Storr in 2017 after staying in Camasunary Bothy the night before. It was a wet and misty day but I understand why so many people are drawn to this small corner of Scotland. It definitely has an eery, mystical atmosphere which isn’t forgotten quickly.
